Your child’s baby teeth play an important role in the development of their adult smile. Baby teeth help to guide the permanent teeth into their proper place. This way, when they fall out, the adult teeth can grow in replacing them. As your child’s permanent teeth grow in, it is important to have routine dental checkups to make sure they are healthy and performing their proper function. When your child has reached around 7 years of old, regardless of how many teeth have fallen out, it is recommended to see an orthodontist. The American Association of Orthodontists has made this recommendation due to the effectiveness of certain orthodontic treatments at early ages, to screen for orthodontic problems in the general population, and to establish an early habit of holistic, individualized care from a specialist.
Consultations in our office for our 7-year-old patients generally involve digital photographs of the teeth and smile and may include a low-dose 3D x-ray on our state of the art Icat Flx machine. In many cases, only observation is required however some early treatment can be undertaken on children as early as age 7 (or even sooner if a significant problem exists!). At True North Orthodontics, we also look for overcrowding problems and intercept any bad habits. If we find these problems early, we can help resolve them earlier too! This can result in less complicated treatments in the future and could save you more time and money in the long run!
